History is a successful and popular subject at Thornleigh Salesian College. We truly believe that History has a vital role to play in the world beyond the classroom, and that the skills and understanding students gain will help them become the leaders of tomorrow.
The History Department has always prided itself on having a friendly atmosphere, with good staff-student relationships. It is our aim that our students leave not just with a good exam results but also with a better understanding of how the past has shaped the world we live in.
Pupils in Year 7 study Medieval England and have one lesson a week.
Pupils in Year 8 study The Tudors and Stuarts (and slavery) and have two lessons a week.
Pupils in Year 9 study modern world history (the First and Second World War) and have two lessons a week.
History is a very popular GCSE optional subject, with over 120 pupils studying History in Year 10. The GCSE syllabus we follow in Edexcel Medicine through Time (SHP)
History is also a popular choice at A Level with two teaching groups. Students study the AQA syllabus. In Year 12 this includes units on Louis XIV of France and the Holocaust. In Year 13 the units are on modern British History and the causes of World War One.
In the Summer of 2008 all the History rooms in Lower school were totally refurbished. This has created a fantastic learning environment mixing the old (and I don’t mean the staff!) and the new (such as the interactive white boards)
