Pupils have access to several networked rooms of up to date PC's running the latest office and multimedia software. The focus is on not only teaching students how to use the various software products but how to apply that knowledge in real world situations.
ICT is used throughout the school both in teaching and learning, all classrooms are equipped with projectors, many also have interactive whiteboards.
The ICT Department encourages students to :-
use ICT resources effectively and independently
demonstrate a practical competence in using effectively a number of Microsoft Applications including Word, Excel and Access
further understanding and appreciation of ICT applications within everyday situations
acknowledge and appreciate reasons for, and issues relating to, the protection of data
recognise the importance of ICT in the continued development of society as a whole
develop an inquisitive nature, critical thinking skills, and a good awareness of new technologies around them
Key Stage 3 - Years 7 and 8
At Key stage 3, pupils in year 7 and 8 get 1 hour of ICT each week in the ICT department. In addition, pupils study ICT across the curriculum. All pupils follow the QCA KS3 strategy for ICT.
The enthusiasm of our pupils' leads to many of them making use of the lunchtime to practice their skills and develop them further.
Key Stage 3 - Year 9
OCR level 2 ICT Nationals
At the end of Year 8 all students will have completed the requirements set out in the QCA KS3 strategy for ICT, and in Year 9 will start the OCR level 2 ICT Nationals course with Unit 21 (Creating computer graphics).
Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11
OCR level 2 ICT Nationals
The new OCR level 2 Nationals in ICT are structured as four separate qualifications to accommodate the needs and abilities of all of our students:
OCR Level 2 National First Award in ICT ( = 1 GCSE)
OCR Level 2 National Award in ICT ( = 2 GCSEs)
OCR Level 2 National First Certificate in ICT ( = 3 GCSEs)
OCR Level 2 National Certificate in ICT ( = 4 GCSEs)
This programme includes a wide range of ICT topics including:
Digital imaging - plan and produce computer graphics Technological innovation and e-commerce
Office Applications
Creating video
Creating animation for the WWW using ICT
Creating sound using ICT
Key Stage 5 - Years 12 and 13
GCE in Applied ICT
The GCE in Applied ICT has been designed to provide a broad educational basis for further education or or moving into employment within the ICT sector. It is a very practical course. There are six units; The Information Age, The Digital Economy and The Knowledge Worker are compulsory AS Units.
Two of the three A2 Units, Using Database Software and Managing ICT Projects are also compulsory; the third is a choice between using Multimedia Software and Using Spreadsheets.
This will be one of the first courses to be built a round an 'E-portfolio'. Essentially, this means that the exam board will assess work submitted in an electronic medium. Students will also have to sit tests (Practical Assessments) for two units, one in each year of study.
