Sixth Form Admissions

Thornleigh Sixth Form is an open access Sixth Form and welcomes students both from Thornleigh and other schools. Although we are a Catholic Sixth form we welcome students from other faiths and are proud of our sense of community and social cohesion which is a strong feature of our Sixth Form. The admissions policy and criteria re listed below.

Admissions Policy

Thornleigh Sixth form: Admissions Policy for September 2009

1. The number for the Sixth Form is 305 and the usual intake number for Year 12 is 180

2. The number of external students admitted into Year 12 (including students from Mount St Joseph and St Josephs) is 60.

3. Where there is oversubscription for entry in to the Sixth form, selection will be based on the following admissions criteria:

o Students from Thornleigh
o Students from Mount St Joseph and St Josephs
o Roman Catholic Students applying from other schools who are resident in Bolton LA
o Other Roman Catholic students
o Other students applying from schools in Bolton LA
o Other students applying from schools outside Bolton LA

If there was to be a situation of oversubscription within stages 4 and 5, then a criteria of distance from the sixth form to a student’s place of residence would need to be used.

4. A minimum requirement for admission to the normal pattern of four AS level courses will be five GCSE passes at grades A* to C including Maths and English, or the equivalent in five subject areas. Students with 5 A* - C which did not include Maths and/or English would be expected to resit those particular GCSEs and so would have to reduce the number of AS levels they were able to study. Students pursuing a one year level 2 course would be treated on an individual basis.

5. If a student has five passes at A*-C including Maths and English then they would normally have access to their choice of AS courses with the proviso that they meet the requirements for that particular course as outlined in the Sixth Form prospectus and that the combination of courses is permitted within the option matrix. In the unlikely event of a particular subject being oversubscribed, the Director of the Sixth Form will have the discretion to make decisions after conversations with individual students.

6. For progression to A2 level a student must have passed the corresponding AS level unless there are exceptional circumstances negotiated between the student, subject leader and director of Keystage 5. Where such exceptions are made, a student will not be guaranteed progression to the actual A2 exam without satisfactory AS resit marks in January.

7. A student will not normally progress to Year 13 unless they are following a minimum of two A2 courses (even though this may mean that in a repeat Year 12 year they may be following one A2 course).
