One of our aims is to help students prepare themselves as well as possible for careers and higher education.
It is important to us that students be given good guidance and information so that they can make the right choices for themselves and have the best qualifications with which to move forward into their chosen area.
About 75% of students progress to higher education but it is important to help students with all progression routes.
Careers
• The Connexions service is available every week and an appointment with a connexions advisor can be made through Mrs Stanley in the library. The Connexions service in Bolton can be accessed at www.connexions-bolton.com
• Work experience – In June students in year 12 have a work experience week. Post 16 there are many more opportunities for work experience and it is important to reflect not just on what is done but what is learned in the process. The work experience can form a valuable part of job applications and university personal statements. It is primarily the student’s responsibility to find a placement and it is important that you try to find something related to a career you are interested in.
• Higher Education/Careers Week – in June we have a Higher Education/Careers day with a variety of speakers from different career and university possibilities. The day also includes information about finance and the university application process. During the week there are also opportunities to visit universities and taster sessions at them in a variety of courses.

• UMS Scores and grades – universities give offers either based on A level grades (eg BBB) or UCAS points ( eg 240 points where an A* = 140 A = 120, a B=100, C = 80, D= 60 and an E = 40). It is important to maximise your UMS scores and units of exams can be done again to help achieve this.
• UCAS – throughout the autumn term of Year 13 you will have help in completing your university application form. There are links to the UCAS website, all university websites and the student finance site below.
